REPORT ON THE ANNUAL PDI COMPETITION FOR THE BYTE TROPHY

Last night, 25th April, Alan ‘Aussie’ Thompson came along to judge this competition. What an agreeable fellow he is, and what insights he gave us.

Alan did more than judge our work, he also threw in a free tutorial. Along with his considerations of each image, he made useful suggestions on how the image could be improved, and what editing tools should be used. He stated that his aim was to help us get the best out of our work, and to encourage us to experiment, even if it was only making minuscule adjustments with a slider.

Among the things he suggested we try were: luminosity tool; HDR; darkening tool; vignetting; and adding fine ‘pin’ borders to PDIs (no more than 2 pixels).

We look forward to seeing you and your fabulous shirt again next Season, Alan!

So who fared well? Of the 60 entries, most were scored between 17 and 19.  Only five attracted scores of 20, which were spread between Lorraine Jackman, Dennis Craggs and Dick Fielding. Only three weeks to go until we find out who has bagged the trophy.
