Marlow Camera Club

We start the season with some time to catch up, a preview of what's to come over the season, and a fun Menti based competition for your best photo from over the summer - so please bring your smartphone or tablet so you can participate.

Members to submit images (via PhotoEntry, please) for open discussion within the club. It may be something you want feedback on, it may be something you need help or advice with, or just something you want to show off to others.

An evening shooting the Marlow Players, who will be in costume/character.  We aim to have two studio setups in the hall with lighting options and backdrops. Guidance will be given, so this workshop will be suitable for all levels.

Steven has enthusiastically and successfully competed at club level and above since 2006, and has been judging since early 2017.  As a poacher and gamekeeper he has a fascinating insight into the world of club competitions.  His candid observations are thought provoking, often humourous, informative, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, but always positive.

In the case for the prosecution Steven provides many tips and hints (with examples) as to how to take, process and present competitive images. By discussing the dos and don’ts of competitive photography he endeavours to inspire competitors to increase the quality of their work no matter how experienced they already are.

In the case for the defence (after the tea break adjournment) Steven provides an overview of how judges are trained, discuss their motivations, what they look out for, and their scoring systems.

Peter is an expert on colour - from capture to screen to print (or projection) and this evening he will present a workshop that will help us understand and navigate the pitfalls that can lead to unexpected colour reproduction. 

Peter will bring some colour management goodies available for sale. 

Images with impact. Impactful images are ones that grab your attention and make you stop in your tracks and look at them. They are not slow burning. The judge will be asked to assess images giving significant weight to their impact. Entries via PhotoEntry, please.

Natural World is defined as being predominantly composed of Natural, as opposed to man-made, elements. Examples could include: Animals, (including enclosed animals and pets), Flora and Fauna, Landscapes, Cloud Formations, Astronomy, Seascapes etc. Editing the presented image in software is permitted.

Andrew takes light painting to another level: Using a harmonograph, Andrew creates stunning 3D looking images. He will talk about his images and bring a harmonograph to demonstrate the technique.

Editing software makers, DXO have agreed to come in and run a workshop to show off what can be done with their software.

Jon has kindly agreed to lead an evening which will be something interesting, educational and practical - related to our loose theme of music this year.

Monochrome is defined as having infinite tones from light to dark, but from only one hue or colour. This includes traditional Black & White with the various grey tones in between but could equally be any single colour hue, for example Sepia or Cyanotype. Duotone and split tone images containing more than one hue do not fit the remit of “monochrome”.

Anne Walker Award - Macro

Macro is defined as being presented with greater than 1:1 magnification. A macro lens need not be used but the image must be magnified so it presented larger than life.

A new talk from Steven makes its debut at Marlow Camera Club. This talk is all about music photography – and the best techniques and tips to get the best results. 

Tables hosted by members to show or share something interesting. Last year we had lay-flat technique, mounting and presentation of prints, diy phonebooks, professionally printed prints, 3-d photography, working with film and analog photography and water droplet photography.  Whatever you're into, share your skill!

Environmental Portraiture: A portrait in which the surroundings are just as important as the person, telling us something about who they are: their work, their home, their hobbies, or the place they belong. The setting should add context and meaning, not just serve as a backdrop. This isn't Street photography; the subject should be aware of the camera and, ideally, some level of collaboration between photographer and subject.

Judge: Patrick Seehanach

New for 2025, Daniel's Abstract and Minimalism photography talk looks at ways to refine and simplify compositions, creating abstract images from a variety of different subjects, making use of techniques such as Intentional Camera Movement (ICM), long exposures, making use of windows and doors to frame a view, and more.

Daniel also discusses how he uses selective vision to home in on the relevant details to include, avoiding extraneous elements to highlight what caught his eye in the first place.

Martin is one of our favourite judges and a great speaker. We’ve exhausted his repertoire of talks, so since the Audience with Amanda was so successful last season we’ve asked Martin to come and do a similar thing. Martin will bring a selection of his own work and be open to a Q&A session and discussion with members on all aspects of photography. 

By popular request we will hold another Studio evening where we hire two professional character models and have a guided session photographing them in different lighting setups and situations.

Following on from the excellent talk by John Humphries last season and the talk from Daniel Bridge this season, this competition lets you show off your creative edge.  We've found a judge who's great at understanding these creative artworks, so it should be good!

The judge will be briefed to reward creativity, use of experimental techniques and abstraction.
